FAQs

 Frequently Asked Questions
Revised:28.6.2021

Principle

I am principally a self publisher, this is my business and I make my living publishing my own books and offering my services to help others achieve their own publishing aspirations, for a fee, whether payment up front or through percentage of the royalties from on-line sales; or simply buying printed books through one of the facilities entailed to sell on and provide for distribution.

I am offering and providing a brokerage service to publish your book for you. I will help and support you to pursue your book publishing journey; where I will provide and offer my expertise and services. I am not a publishing house and as a result of that I cannot make advance pay outs nor contractually, whether verbal or written accept the responsibility for promotion and publicising your book.

All publicity and promotion of all books are done at MAP's discretion and no cost to the author, for that all rights are reserved. (see publicity & promotion)

The following options I am able to provided, both of which are an undertaking where by using MAP's services that you are going get your book to the professional standards to publish and where you need copies you will get your printed copies though MAP.

In my set up I am able to offer the following:

Assigned: Get your book published like I have, assign an ISBN number, register your title and publish your book. This option by-passes the giants, and so begins sowing your book seed.

The ISBN number that will be assigned to the books belong to MAPublisher.  The book title is registered, it is registered to MAP; the book, title, design, text, layout, format belongs to MAP in the publishing sphere.  The copyright and the intellectual property belongs to the author unless the authors has in writing relinquished it over to the publisher.

Unassigned: Produce your book, not assign an ISBN number, nor register the title, nor publish the book.  You will have a book equal to the one that would be published, so that you may send copies to the agents and also the publishing houses, such as Penguin, Harper Collins others.  This is a lengthy process.  For this option the full rate of £800.00 is payable, 50% or full up front, if paying 50% remainder before the book is sent to print.

I offer and provide zero obstacles to prevent you from publishing your book:

You don't pay me anything and I don't pay you anything to get this book created and published.

As per normal to all those who have come to me to publish their book/s I have given them the choice on how they would like to proceed.

Free to publish their book - where there is no money exchanged by either side, in return the royalty split for that from on-line sale is 10/80.  10 percent to the writer/author and 90 percent to MAP. Author selling their own book 100%.

 - this is to jump start, springboard or simply launch the writer/author.

The writer can pay for this service, in full or in increments, which ever they feel happy.

 - people have paid in full and also in increments.

Is it too good to be true!

Where is the catch!

Let us know how many you find?.

You have the industry standards royalty ratio at the top end of 10% and no money to pay for the service or have 80% of the royalties for a one off fee of £800.00.

For that amount, you get all the work that is needed to get the book published and also 80% of the royalties if you pay in full to begin with, 80% max is what MAP is prepared to give, this is simply because MAP is a "Publishing Brokerage Service" and not a publishing house, otherwise there will not have been any flexibility getting beyond 10%.

In the long run, you earn your max potential from on-line sales.

Increments (Unique feature continues)

You can also pay increments and the book will be published, so for example if you paid £350, you will have 35% of the share of the royalty, you can buy up to 80%, I want you to.  I would like to get paid for the work that I will do to make your dream come true. And if I ask you, how much is your dream worth?

It is your book that I want to help and assist you to publish, so I made a decision not to put any obstacles in the way. All who publish through MAP benefit from the roll-on publicity and promotion of MAP's Catalogue/Portfolio.

Different people

Now, people are different, some people have the "£" in there eyes - and want to deal with rate and percentage, that is OK with me, that is why all the above options are there.

- the hard fact - it is not simple or straight forward in getting an instant hit - a lot of work goes in to shaping this locally, nationally and globally. I have cushioned this for people who want to test the field.

Cautious

Some of the people have been cautious - they want to wait and see, pay nothing and get the book published, if it does well then they want to pay and get the 80%, that is fine too.

Another thing to note: You can purchase your books at authors rate/price and retain 100% of the profit when you sell them, this is when you buy bulk minimum of 100 copies.

Priceless

The other priceless benefit one gets, is from getting something from concept to reality; that is the relief and the growth within, that lingering smile of achievement in your psyche.  You may find yourself in a different mindset outside of your norm.

Document created 17.5.2021

Operational process:

 1. You send you manuscript

 2. I will set it up on the template

2a. Automated typo check will take place on the work doc.  If you require professional copy editing, then that facility is available, it is a service purchased in, this is currently @ 1p a word.

2b. I will ask for your images - once I get them, I will then process the images for the book and set them in. All images received will require individual attention, size, resetting and colour balancing before inserting in to the book.

2c. In the meantime I will ask for the blurb or synopsis to put on the back page,  also image for the front cover.

(For Unassigned book)

Once the books is approved by you, I will get a seed copy for you. At this point we will have completed our journey of getting your book to publishing ready. All accounts settled.

The book will have credits of MAPublisher service on the legal page.

At this point you will let me know how many copies you would like printed.

I will give you a quote, you will confirm that you are happy with the quote, I will then invoice you. Once the invoice is settled and paid into account, the books will be ordered/place (printers want the money on order). I will confirm receipt of money in account via an email and a receipt will follow at the end of that transaction.

The books will arrive at my address/office, once I have received the consignment, checked and counted, I will let you know that the order is ready for you to collect or drop it off at the Gallery.

Once you have received the books and that transaction is completed you will receive receipt, a way of process to signify end of that transaction.

(For assigned books only)

3. Form 1 - At this point I will send you a royalty distribution account information form, this is to formally get details of where and how you want to receive your royalties. At this point you can consider what you want to do. You can have up to 80% max, 20% default retention of royalties. My charge is £800.00 for the project.

 4. Once all the information and images are received and been typeset and layout in the book, you will receive your approval draft.

5. Once I receive your approved draft, I will assign an  ISBN number, generate a barcode that will be placed on your cover;

- your cover pages will be produced, which will have your title, blurb and the barcode, this I will send for your approval.

 6. Once you return the cover approved - we will go to publish.

 7. Form 2 - I will send you a tax waiver form for the American based royalty distribution company, for their tax purpose, which needs to be uploaded along with your book file. You have to get your own tax information via your own accountant (this you don't have to act straight away, wait and see how the book performs).

 8. The book will be registered.  (only for assigned books)

8a. The digital file will be sent to the distribution for storage for the purpose of "Print-on-demand," (POD). So when a person buys the book on-line from a website, the distribution company prints them out and ships it to the customer.

 9. Once the on-line approval had been completed.  We have published.

9a. Your book will be available immediately on-line.  Simultaneously, your book will submitted for global reach, to be made available with Amazon and all its associate at its discretion.  This process take up to 10 weeks.

 10. You will receive a complimentary seed copy from me. (You will have a copy of your "creation" in your hand). Our publishing journey for that book will be completed 100% at that point.

Colour reproduction - please note the colour reproduction will vary batch to batch and printer to printer. We aim to provide a competitive price for the generic market.  If you must have very high quality reproduction then a specialist service will need to be employed and will require fees accordingly.

Stages

There are few stages before the books get published.

1. Apprising the first impression of the work.

2. Creating the 1st edition of the impression/Manuscript:

  • Shaping it in to the book format, size of book, paper back or hard back, colour  or black and white inside -
    • typesetting & layout,
    • content building,
    • pictures preparing
    • and inserting,
    • pagination,
    • header & footering,
    • dedications,
    • introduction,
    • synopsis /blurb.

  • Cover development - title, images, colour scheme.
  • Designing/creating;
    • liaising of design,
    • proofing,
    • drafting,
    • sample creations,
    • offering choices.
  • Image/art creation.

3. Book development and getting pre-publishing ready:

Ensuring the book meets the publishing requirements, size, page spacing, guttering, bleed, bar coding, bar boxing.

 4. Writer development - the discussion fill with content about the processes, such as the Print on demand (POD) process and what it entails, the cost per POD item, where they will be available to buy on-line and many others.

The writer will know about royalties and will fill a form to set up the royalty account.

Will also learn through the process of royalty and how it is set up through MAP.  Will learn that MAP offers options for the writer, that they have choices; ones that are they to support the writer to achieve the aspiration with flexible facility to shape their future; in favourable terms to them.

W.C.I - Unique Features

Indefinite deferment & Buyback

Under the “Writer’s Champion Imprint,” (WCI) provides an “indefinite deferment of that fee” and “Buyback,” option.

Indefinite deferment – People who are unable to pay or those who want to test the market first, have the option to defer the payment, all writers are assigned 10% of the royalty and 90% to me.

Buy/have Back – under WCI’s facilitation – you can “buyback,” the royalty percentage of the book.  So you can pay the fee and get maximum of 80% share of the royalty. You can “buyback,” in full or in increments. Buyback will only happen after the book is registered.  This buy back will only happen because you did not pay the full fee at the time; before registration.

All buyback transaction will incur administration cost. Minimum of £35.00 and or a rate appropriated at that time.

Please note, the buyback fee is not subjected to royalties earned, nor can the royalties earned be used as a deduction of the fee nor is earning royalties guaranteed.

Please note “Indefinite deferment/Buyback,” if you have chosen not to pay to proceed with this publication and enjoy its benefits then you understand the inherent terms of the buyback facility attached to it; you can’t claim on royalties earned.

Otherwise you are in control of your publication journey with your book.

In proceeding with the publication means, that you have read and understood the “buyback” terms.

Pay up & have back (WCI's Unique Features continue)

PayUp

At any point, the fee will not increase, it is a one-off payment, and you can buy in increments, (however, if you choose to pay increments then there is admin cost (£35.00) each time a payment is received it has to be reset with the distributer).

You can "have back" the maximum of 80%, by "paying up" the fees of £800.00, which MAP didn't charge to get you and your book launched. The amount is no way a reflection of actual time taken to service your book, it includes, meetings, liaisons, emails, reviews, drafting, retouching, creating samples and drafts, with the author, on the work, with the printers, with the auxiliary services and administration of the project.

If you don't want to buy back, that is ok too, you can wait and see how the book is doing before you commit to buy.

Can the royalties earned through on-sales be taken in to account as a way of paying for the fees?

No.  The royalties earned through the books sale is "right of earnings,"  for the work committed to getting the book launched. Fees remain payable at anytime (without interest accrued on it) should the authors decides to "have back," however, admin fee will apply to facilitate the process.

How many books can I publish for free?

One

How many poems can I publish in the anthology?

That will depend on the demand, minimum 1, up to 10 poems.

How long can the poems be?

39 lines for an A5 page, including title.

How many anthologies can I publish my work in?

As many as you can keep up with and are printed.

Rights

 You own your Copyright 100%.

For assigned books: You give MAPublisher 100% publishing and reproduction rights, that's the process.

For unassigned books: You give MAPublisher 100% production right to print books for you and for the purpose of publicity and promotion at MAPs discretion at their own cost.

Pre-publication phase

Now that the book content and the cover is completed and approved, the next step is to sort out all the paperwork required to successfully publish the book.
Following steps are to ensure you are in control of the process, taking informed decisions and manage expectations.
You will receive the following shortly:
 1.       W-8BEN form: to be completed for the registration of the book with the LULU, who are the distribution and digital file holder and the revenue handler for MAPublisher. All revenue receivers have to complete it for their tax purposes. (see notes supplied)
2.       Confirming the cost of manufacturing the book & book technical specifications.
3.       Setting the retail price of the book – where you need to give instruction for your retail price.
4.       Confirming the royalty as will be split by the revenue distributor.
5.       Authors rate – to buy
6.       ISBN Assignment certificate
7.       Terms of reference – once you have responded to 2-5, then 6 and 7 will be finalised and sent.

1.What is an W-8BEN form?

W-8BEN Form

“All non-US persons and entities are required to complete an IRS Form W-8 to certify your country of tax residence and to establish whether you qualify for a reduced rate of withholding when opening an account.”

In order for us to complete the registration of the book with the on-line distribution chain who is America based, they require the above form to be help in account.

You only fill this up once, not required each time you publish a book.

You have to seek advice from an account or if you are already in business then consult your account for advice and guidance.

You are responsible for your handling your own money from the sales of your book.

Without the form, the registration with the distribution company will not be complete.

5. Authors rate / Cost of your book:

Cost of book vary book to book.

Print on demand books cost more than bulk printing books

Bulk print of 100 copies will see the cost reduce considerable per copy and further reduction on higher volumes, quotes are provided on request for higher volumes.

Why do I have to pay handling fee to buy from MAPublisher?

Handling Fee

 Handling charge = Fee = Royalty = Commission –

MAP’s Default rate: 20%

When you are purchasing books through MAPublisher, whether single or bulk book there is a handling charge.

When MAPublisher processes your order to purchase/acquire copies of your books outside the “print on demand chain,” to supply you; where no royalties are paid out, MAP’s fees are applied; a flat rate of 20% default and that is subject to change/increase at MAP’s discretion.

These fees are subject to rolling inflation rate as well as tax and VAT.  At this moment in time no VAT is levied but that is subject to change of business circumstance, if and when it becomes applicable.

Can I set any sale price on my book?

3. Price determination

The beauty of this process and service is that you get through MAPublisher’s Publication Brokerage Services are that you are in control of how you want to shape the books journey.

Once the book is completed and registered with the ISBN number in the National/International database and in the British Library catalogue, it is up to you how you want to get your books to the customers.

You have the full control to do it yourself or use an on-line distribution chain, and or you can have both.

Do it yourself, as in handle the printing and distribution process.

When a customer wants a copy of your book, you will post it to the customer direct or the shop they ordered through. This way you are 100% in control, 100% of labour and admin, 100% control of the price, quality and service.

You have 100% choice of how much profit you want to make, at least enough money to cover costs and expense.

The second option to leave it with the Distribution chain and they will do it for you, for that they will take a fee.  After the sale, after deductions, the profit from the book is paid to your account subject to their terms and conditions.

You have a say in the retail price you want but a minimum cost is set by the distribution company to cover the cost & fees.

So via this set up you do not have a say on the cost of furnishing the book, which is indicative of the cost and fee chain.

4. Royalty:

Where there is no money exchanged, the royalty split is default of 10% to author & 80% to me.

 How royalty is determined.

 An example:

say the book cost £3.00 to produce and the distributers charge is 20% from the sales price and Amazon takes 50% from the sales price. So if you set the retail price @£12.00.

The breakdown as follows:

Sale price:                                £12.00

Amazon fee 50%                     -£6.00

Book production                      -£3.00

Distribution fee 20%               -£2.40

Total cost                                 £11.40

Balance left                             £0.60

So the 60p with be split 20/80 12p & 48p. This will be the royalty distributed.  This a sample price. The exact figure will be supplied once the book has been published. This is for your information guide.

Payments:

For your information. All royalty monies are handled and processed by the distribution company on behalf of MAPublisher (MAP). MAP does not handle any money from the sales of the book.

All monies are paid in to a holding account integrated into their banking system.  Once a threshold is achieved £5.00 minimum for PayPal account clients £20.00 threshold for postal cheque clients.

The royalty payment cycle is monthly, if you don't meet the threshold then the balance will roll over to the next and so on until, the threshold is achieved.

This is done automatically - so MAP does not undertake or commit to providing regular updates.

6. ISBN Information

(International Standard Book Number)

[The International Standard Book Number is a numeric commercial book identifier which is intended to be unique. Publishers purchase ISBNs from an affiliate of the International ISBN Agency. An ISBN is assigned to each separate edition and variation of a publication. Wikipedia]

As a self publisher I have purchased a number of ISBN numbers for the purpose of publishing my own books.  These numbers now belong and are assigned to me. I now assign a book to each one of them as they come along and go to publish for myself, and also assign other people’s work for a fee.

As an assigned option part, the brokerage service gets your book into publication; I assign a number to your book. Once registered: your book, its content and its details along with your name is assigned to it and on record with the central database.

While I own the ISBN.  You own your book and your work, you own the copyright. Your copyright is protected till 75 years after your death. In order for me to facilitate the publication of your book you have given me consent to get your book to publication, to make it available and accessible for the public to buy, via the “print on demand,” (POD) system that is facilitated by a third party.

Why do I have to pay postage and packaging?

Post & Packaging

Postage and packaging is determined by the distribution company.  All books are delivered in brown card. Large qualities are delivered in boxes.

These books whether single or multiple, they are packaged in card board, and as such they become small parcels or large letter.

The postage is determined by Royal mail/delivery Company.

Discount, the postage and packaging goes down on/when higher volumes are ordered. You will have to ask at the time of quote.

Bulk printed.

If you go for large volume print through a traditional litho printer then the delivery charge is factored in the quote.
